Part of Jim Allen's 2010 remake at Michael Lett Gallery of his 1969 art/installation at Barry Lett Galleries [no relation] 1969 - NZ's 1st installation [see another photo on http://www.flickr.com/photos/fflap]. Two of the cubic pieces, are 'walk-thru sculptural pieces -- made of thick nylon thread hanging from boards -- originals, black, but the new ones white to match the gallery.
This one has also broad transparent plastic strips at its edges & inside a series of strips lit by black-light of a poem by the late-lamented poet Hone Tuwhare.
The second piece has a dense mass of plastic strips and on the floor some beautiful loose thick strands of dried native flax [phormium tenax] specially made with an old flax-shredder.
The third piece was a water-filled transparent plastic 'pillow with water and a circular area of air above it [not re-made for the present exhibition] & the fourth piece is a welded transparent plastic softly curving inflated 'cube'.
The three pieces in the present re-make offer varied sensuous equivalents of the favourite simple cubic form of 'minimal sculpture' -- penetrable or impenetrable, shining plastic, or striated plastic with plastic strips & with its own interior lighting -- the effect of light on & through materials creating variants in sensuous perception of volume and space.
This now 'classic' work, which only existed for 2 weeks in its original exhibition has delighted young artists & their friends who didn't even know of its existence, as if it was made for them by some unknown new young contemporary, Jim Allen is now well over 80 years old & happily active as a sculptor/installation artist.
I remember the 1969 version & it was a joy to see the re-make -- revival, resurrection -- of it today. Congratulations to Jim Allen and to Michael Lett
